When you think about air conditioning systems, you might think first about a central air system that distributes cooled air throughout a building from a central location. This is a great option when the building has the ductwork in place to handle such a design, but that’s not always the case. Often, older homes and other buildings won’t have the ducts for this plan, so an alternative approach is required.
Enter the mini-split. Without the need for ducts, this type of air conditioning can cool your home or commercial building efficiently. If you’d like to learn more about a ductless mini-split system, or if you are ready to get started on this project, get in touch with Bailey's Comfort Services today to work with our friendly team.
Perhaps the best way to explain how a ductless mini-split air conditioner works is to highlight how it differs from a standard system. Rather than cooling air all in one place, and then pumping the air out through the ducts, mini-splits work by producing cool air in many different locations. There is still one single outdoor unit, as with a central air system, but that outdoor unit is connected to multiple indoor units.
In this way, mini-split systems produce air in the same place where the air will be distributed. For instance, you might decide to have a mini-split indoor unit installed in your living room and two of your bedrooms. That would be a total of three indoor units, all of which would connect to the outdoor unit and each of those spaces would be cooled when the system kicks on.
As mentioned above, this design is ideal when ductwork is not available in a building. While not every space in the home will be cooled (unless you added an indoor unit to each room) a mini-split can be more efficient because it doesn’t need to cool down spaces that aren’t often used. If you have an extra bedroom that is rarely occupied, for example, you can skip that room with a mini-split system and avoid spending extra money on energy to cool a space where no one is sleeping.
